Thousands of American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) highly qualified exercise professionals make a significant difference in their clients’ health each day. A standard of best practices does exist for personal trainers in the fitness industry, and most of ACSM’s certifications require a bachelor’s degree in exercise science or kinesiology at minimum. When selecting trainers, the best criteria to use are their education, certification and training background, not whether they themselves appear to be fit.

The best quality of a personal trainer is the ability to create a well rounded, sustainable exercise program that addresses the immediate and long-term needs of the specific client or group. A well rounded training session should be safe, fun and address the needs of the client, not the current fitness fads.
