Top Fitness Trends for 2019

We are now 2 months into 2019, how are your resolutions going?

Ive noticed the majority of people in the gym tend to fall off of their New Year’s fitness programs as we enter March. Regardless of the reason for the fall off, I typically notice a higher level of success from those clients who commit to pushing through a 12 week training period or longer.

If you are having a hard time sticking with your program, maybe you are limiting your training options. The American College of Sports Medicine has compiled the results of their fitness trends for 2019. Among the top 20 fitness trends, you may want to consider #2 Group Training, #3 a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) program, or maybe #5 body weight training. There are programs and gyms out there that incorporate all of those within one program as well.

If group training is not your thing, then #6, employing a certified fitness professional would certainly get you to your goal quickly and safely. The biggest reason we see for the resolution falloff is because of a failure to plan. Failure happens too often as too much training  can cause you to overdose on exercise leading to injury… too little and you may not even make it to your fitness goal. Planning your training can be tricky and a certified personal trainer or exercise physiologist can take all of the guess work out of your fitness program. Not sure who to hire? Look for an educated and certified personal trainer who is resourceful and knowledgeable about fitness and exercise physiology.

Trying to save money? Some personal trainers offer training in a small group format, #19. Usually no more than 3-6 students in one session will help to split the cost of the training. Rather than paying full price for your session, you can sometimes save big on the same training by joining a friend or two for the session.

If wellness is your goal, then look for an exercise physiologist or personal trainer who is versed in the #10 Exercise Is Medicine and #9 functional fitness training programs. By focusing on a functional or prevention program, you can not only prevent injury, but also improve functional movement by focusing on movements specific to your unique needs. Post Rehabilitation classes also focus on functional movement for individuals looking to improve their strength after going through rehab, physical therapy or chiropractic care.

Exercise for weight loss #12, outcome measurements #16 and weight management, are another facet of wellness that has a huge impact on the Exercise Is Medicine movement. Focused weight management not only addresses how we look but can also positively impact how we feel, how we move and our overall health. Diseases such as diabetes may also be reduced or prevented as well by improving the bodies composition and activity levels, the ratio of fat to muscle.

Exercise training programs should be simple and focused to be effective and enjoyable.
